2022 – Majura Women's Group

Majura Women’s Group Program

Providing opportunities for friendship and creative outlet for women with young children. Come along on Wednesdays during school term from 9.30am to 12:30. We meet at the Downer Community Centre. Childcare for children 9 months+ provided for a gold coin donation. New members are always welcome. Our activities are open to all mums with kids under 5 years of age. No bookings required, just show up!

Term 1 2022

Please note: In addition to our in person progam, we will be running a virtual "Majura Women's Group Check In Sessions" program throughout term 1. In these sessions, we will be able to meet via Zoom for a casual chat and craft. This term we will be working on an individual "Term-long" project. Wednesdays 2nd Feb 9:30am	Board Games Welcome new mums joining us this year, and welcome back to everyone else! Today we sit down and catch up over a range of board games and a cuppa. Feel free to bring in your favourites to play with the group.
9th Feb 9:30am	Papercraft Get those creative juices flowing as Anne Patterson from Close to My Heart brings us her mobile craft studio for a morning of papercraft.
16th Feb 9.30am	Mosaic Planning Session Last year Majura Womens Group celebrated it's 40th Anniversary. Yay us! To comemmorate this event, we are working with a local artist to design and construct a mosaic which will be permenantly displayed in the courtyard outside the Downer community centre. Bring your ideas for a collaborative planning session.
23rd Feb 9.30am	Tie Dye Groovy man! Brighten up your kid's wardrobes as we get messy with fun tie dye shirts. Some shirts will be provided in sizes 1-5, or feel free to bring your own. Due to the messy nature of this activity we will be switching rooms with the childcare this week.
2nd March 9.30am	Mosaic Design Session Last year Majura Womens Group celebrated it's 40th Anniversary. Yay us! To comemmorate this event, we are working with a local artist to design and construct a mosaic which will be permenantly displayed in the courtyard outside the Downer community centre. Bring your ideas for a collaborative planning session as we sketch out our design and learn some basic tile cutting skills with Tina van Raay.
9th March 9.30am	African Drumming African drumming is an absolute blast. Immerse yourself in a group of drummers, learning to play rythms in unison. Facilitated by Yvette from Drum Effect.
16th March 9.30am	Menopause Talk Join us as Dr Clare Holberton and Angela Rule, Community Education and Health Promotion Officer from Sexual Health and Family Planning ACT, talk with us about menopause.
23rd March 9.30am	Beaded Jewellry Jewellry is always more special when there's meaning behind it. What better way to achieve that than by making it yourself! Today MWG member Brooke will be leading us through making our own beaded jewellery.
30th March 9.30am	Mosaic Making Part 1 This week we begin fabrication of our 40 years mosaic with the help of local artist Tina van Raay. Please bring along any ceramics or unusual items you have collected that you would like to incorporate into the mosaic.
6th April 9.30am	Zumba Don your active wear and let's get this party started! We welcome back the ever popular Naomi to lead us in some energetic Zumba dancing.

Wednesdays 27th April 9:30am	Nature Journalling Immerse yourself in art inspired by nature as we embark on the creative journey of nature journalling with Julia from Nature Art Lab. All materials will be provided.
4th May 9:30am	Beaded Jewellery Making Today MWG member Brooke will be leading us through making our own beaded jewellry. What a fantastic way to end up with a special piece you will love to wear! All materials and tools will be provided.

8th June 9.30am	Yoga and Meditation Relax your mind and body as we learn some yoga and meditation techniques with Judy. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, a drink bottle, and something to keep warm during the meditation & visualisation.

22nd June 9.30am	Indigenous Weaving Today we are honoured to welcome Ronnie Jordan, from Culture on the Move. Ronnie is a descendent of the Kalkadoon People of the Mount Isa region, and will be teaching us some traditional indigenous weaving.
29th June 9.30am	Circus Skills Roll up, roll up! Time to get silly while working on our coordination as we learn some circus skills courtesy of the fantastic folk at Warehouse Circus.

Term 3 2022

Wednesdays 20th July 9:30am	Decoupage placemats Welcome back for term 3 everyone! Today Bree from Wattlebird Canberra will be teaching us how to make two decoupage placemats each of our very own creation to take home. Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Lets get those creative juices flowing!
27th July 9:30am	Pilates Belinda from Body Intelligence is back to guide us though another fantastic Pilates session. Pop on your activewear and join us for this low-impact exercise activity.
3rd August 9.30am	Line Dancing We are delighted to welcome back Julie from National Capital Bootscooting. We always have a fabulous time learning to linedance with Julie. Got 2 left feet? No problem! - so do a lot of us 😉
10th August 9.30am	Scrunchies & Flower Broaches Sewing can be sew (ha!) much fun! Today Juanita from Made By You will be teaching us to make our own hair scrunchies and flower broaches. You will go home with your own unique wearable creations.
17th August 9.30am	Paint Along Embrace your inner artist and create a masterpiece with Paint Along. No experience needed. 100% beginner-friendly. You'll be guided step by step by friendly & patient artist instructor recreating your own Masterpiece in relaxed environment over 2 hours. Just grab a friend or be ready to make new ones. You'll be amazed at what you can do!
17th August 9.30am	Papercraft Anne from Close to My Heart is back to do some fantabulously fun papercraft with us. Today we will be making "10 things I love about you" albums to gift to those special people in our lives. What a great idea with Fathers Day just around the corner!
24th August 9.30am	Let's Talk About Wills Nicole Platt from Griffin Legal will be joining us today for a discussion on wills and estate planning, as we aim to demystify the topic and gain greater understanding of what is involved. Often a confronting thing to think about as parents, but also a very important one.
7th September 9.30am	Embroidery This week we welcome muliti-skilled artist Hangamaa Obaidullah to teach us embroidery. Hangama came to Canberra as a refugee from Afghanistan, and her work draws on her Afghani heritage, her homeland and its history.
14th September 9.30am	Wet Felting Today we will be making felt flower broaches with Lynne Sanders from Canberra Region Feltmakers. Lynne has been a felt maker for over 20 years, and makes and sells beautiful felt scarves at the Old Canberra Bus Depot Markets.
21st September 9.30am	UnFinished Objects UnFinished Objects! Bring along an activity from earlier in the year which you haven't finished, or anything crafty you are in the process of making at home that you want to work on. Don't have a project on the go? Help yourself to an activity from our cupboard.

Term 4 2022

Wednesdays 12th October 9:30am	Millinery Sunhats Welcome back for term 4! The sun is finally out and UV levels are on the rise. Come and decorate your very own sun hat with the help of expert milliner Christine Waring.
19th October 9:30am	Macrame Plant Hangers Time to get knotting as local artist Annette Boyd teaches us all how to make macrame plant hangers. Annette is very environmentally conscious and specialises in crafts made from natural materials.
26th October 9.30am	Womens Health and Physiotherapy Discussion Today we are joined by Womens Health Physiotherapist Lauren Riddell for an informal chat about womens health. Lauren Specialises in pelvic floor, incontinence, prolapse, sexual health and lactation. She has plenty of tips and tricks to share with us, and looks forward to answering your burning questions.
2nd November 9.30am	Plant Pot Decorating Today we are decorating plant pots. Brighten up your garden, or put them in your Macrame hanger from our week 2 activity.
9th November 9.30am	Lindy Hop Swing Dancing It’s time to get your dancing shoes on and give SWING DANCING a go! This week Philippa from Canberra Swing Katz will be teaching us Lindy Hop.
16th November 9.30am	Polymer Clay Bowls Local artist Lex Sorrentino has been teaching sculpting in Polymer & Air-Drying Clay for approximately 24 years. And this week she will be sharing her knowledge with us, as we learn how to make and bake beautiful polymer clay bowls.
23rd November 9.30am	Watercolour Painting Come and learn the art of watercolour painting! Sienna from Ink and Wattle will teach us a series of expressive watercolour techniques and guide us through the step-by-step process of creating our own watercolour artworks. MWG members will be able vote on the painting selection for this session in our members Facebook group.
30th November 9.30am	Papercraft This week we welcome back the ever popular Anne Patterson from Close To My Heart for a Christmas themed paper craft session.
7th December 9.30am	Canvas Decorating Get your creative juices flowing as we decorate canvases with paint pens, buttons, puffy paint, and anything else you can find in our craft cupboard. The only limit is your imagination!
14th December 9.30am	Punch Needle Kits For the last session of the year we have a relaxing craft morning planned with some Christmas themed punch needle kits and a spectacular morning tea. Or bring along some wrapping paper and get your Xmas wrapping done
