Majura Women’s Group Program

Providing opportunities for friendship and creative outlet for women with young children. Come along on Wednesdays during school term from 9.30am to 12:30. We meet at the Downer Community Centre. Childcare for children 9 months+ provided for a gold coin donation. New members are always welcome.  Our activities are open to all mums with kids under 5 years of age. No bookings required, just show up!

Term 1 2022

Please note: In addition to our in person progam, we will be running a virtual "Majura Women's Group Check In Sessions" program throughout term 1. In these sessions, we will be able to meet via Zoom for a casual chat and craft. This term we will be working on an individual "Term-long" project. Mosaic Planning Session
Last year Majura Womens Group celebrated it's 40th Anniversary.  Yay us!  To comemmorate this event, we are working with a local artist to design and construct a mosaic which will be permenantly displayed in the courtyard outside the Downer community centre.  Bring your ideas  for a collaborative planning session.

Tie Dye
Groovy man!  Brighten up your kid's wardrobes as we get messy with fun tie dye shirts.  Some shirts will be provided in sizes 1-5, or feel free to bring your own. Due to the messy nature of this activity we will be switching rooms with the childcare this week.

Today we are honoured to welcome Ronnie Jordan, from Culture on the Move. Ronnie is a descendent of the Kalkadoon People of the Mount Isa region, and will be teaching us some traditional indigenous weaving.

Decoupage placemats
Welcome back for term 3 everyone! Today Bree from Wattlebird Canberra will be teaching us how to make two decoupage placemats each of our very own creation to take home. Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Lets get those creative juices flowing!

This week we welcome muliti-skilled artist Hangamaa Obaidullah to teach us embroidery. Hangama came to Canberra as a refugee from Afghanistan, and her work draws on her Afghani heritage, her homeland and its history.

Today we will be making felt flower broaches with Lynne Sanders from Canberra Region Feltmakers. Lynne has been a felt maker for over 20 years, and makes and sells beautiful felt scarves at the Old Canberra Bus Depot Markets.

Today we are joined by Womens Health Physiotherapist Lauren Riddell for an informal chat about womens health. Lauren Specialises in pelvic floor, incontinence, prolapse, sexual health and lactation. She has plenty of tips and tricks to share with us, and looks forward to answering your burning questions.

Sienna from Ink and Wattle will teach us a series of expressive watercolour techniques and guide us through the step-by-step process of creating our own watercolour artworks.
