Who we are and what do we do?
Majura Women’s Group (MWG) is a self-run volunteer organisation founded in 1981. The group was created to provide opportunities for women in Canberra at home with young children to meet and participate in stimulating and creative activities. Over the years this has evolved into participating in backyard projects and have created works of art that are scattered over Canberra. As a group we all decide on what sessions we would like to participate and form our programs from those ideas. The backyard projects over the years have been reformatted into mini backyard projects where a theme is carried out over the term. We have participated in learning new skills such as African drumming, felting, quilting, yoga, basket weaving, photography, all styles of dancing, street art, flower arrangement. You name it, we have probably done it, and if not we love a new challenge!
This Mosaic was created in 2000 and resides on the wall at Dickson Pool.
We also have works at Kippax Library, QE2 and just recently gifted a felt works called “Heartfelt Flowers” to a new trauma centre for children at Melaleuca Place.
Who Funds Us?
We operate with assistance from the ACT Government through the Office for Children, Youth and Family Support, the Canberra Community Grants Program, and the Community Inclusion Fund (in partnership with Mental Health ACT). Hopefully this community initiative can continue for more generations of mothers and children to enjoy so please join our little community and enjoy the benefits that this group provides.
Membership
Membership is $10 a year. This is amazing to be able to do so much for so little. If you are going through hardship this can be discussed. You can sign up to be a member when you come to a session. Otherwise you can enjoy a session for a gold coin donation. Members get to participate in an annual well being day where a day is taken to pamper yourself (without children) with massage, yoga, reflexology and stress free management.
Child Care
Child care is available for a gold coin donation with our four child care professionals from Randstad. Our childcare is located next to our meeting room so your children are close at all times. We are advocates of attachment parenting and are more than happy for you to have your young babies and toddlers with you and have a play area if required. Please see our page on Child Care for more information.
Committee Members
We hold an annual general meeting every September where you are welcome to join the MWG Committee (please see list of roles on the committee page) Being on the committee allows you an opportunity to participate in the running of the group and gaining an array of skills that are applicable in the paid work force, thereby keeping up a skill base whilst at home with children. It’s also a great way to meet and work together with a fabulous group of women and contribute back to the community via this very important Canberra women’s group.
Meeting Place
Meetings are held each week during school terms at the Downer Community Hall, Frencham Place, Downer.
Please arrive at 9:30 to settle in your children. Our session commences at 10am and finishes at 12:15pm to allow enough time to all contribute to packing away to collect our children by 12.30pm. There is a sign in sheet for you and your children. Please be sure to sign in.
